THE PROMPT

Write A Story As A Series of Letters/Tweets/Memos

*

10 January 1982.

Dear Ebony,

Remember that summer we spent every day on the beach together? We had a cooler filled with cold sandwiches and beer, and it was just us two. We built sandcastles together. Your skin was so sensitive to the sunlight without suntan lotion. You would doze off with an open novel on your chest. Sometimes I think back often.

With love,

Raymond.

Dear Ebony,

Do you still puke after you get off roller coasters? I’ve still never laughed so hard in my life.

With love,

Raymond.

14 February 1982

Dear Ebony,

Save me the last dance. Happy Valentine’s Day.

With Love,

Raymond.

22 March 1982

Dear Ebony,

Went to a wedding last week. It was so boring. Not to sound negative, but I give them three years of marriage tops. I saw unhappiness in his eyes. I hope I’m wrong. You will always be my favorite plus one.

With Love,

Raymond.

16 April 1982

Dear Ebony,

Are you still ashamed of your first tattoo? I thought it was actually adorable. You held my hand the entire way through it while you chewed on the collar of your t-shirt.

With Love,

Raymond.

02 May 1982

Dear Ebony,

Do you know how to play the chords for Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” on your guitar?

With Love,

Raymond.

21 June 1982

Dear Ebony,

I’m not doing that. You can say whatever you want.

Raymond.

07 July 1982

Dear Ebony,

Go ahead.

Raymond.

27 July 1982

Dear Ebony,

You’re tired? You think you’re the only one?

Raymond.

13 August 1982

Dear Ebony,

I will NEVER force someone to stay where they no longer want to be. Why does everything have to be an argument with you?

Raymond.

20 August 1982

Dear Ebony,

I’m selfish? If that’s so it’s only because I learn from the best, Sensei.

Raymond.

***

05 September 1982

Dear Ebony,

How’s your brother recovering? Give him my regards. Let him know he’s in my prayers.

With Love,

Raymond.

27 October 1982

Dear Ebony,

You don’t even need a costume for Halloween, just show your soul.

Raymond.

17 November 1982

Dear Ebony,

I’m just trying to be thankful for all the blessings in my life. I’m not forcing you to come. Just tell your mother Happy Thanksgiving for me. (She making Pumpkin Pie?)

With love,

Raymond.

23 December 1982

Well, I guess this is it. I respect your decision. I wish it didn’t have to be this way, but maybe the timing isn’t ideal for either of us. Maybe all sandcastles eventually wash away. Have a wonderful Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

With Love Eternal,

Raymond.

08 May 1984

Dear Ebony,

I just wanted to say congratulations on your little bundle of joy, Lola. I know you’re going to be an incredible mother. I’m really happy for you. I wish you and your family continued blessings, and an abundance of love, happiness and joy.

All the best,

Raymond.
