“Homework Assignment”

Name: Max Johnson

Grade: 4th.

Homework Assignment: Introduce yourself to your new teacher Ms. Bennett and your new classmates. (Be prepared to share this in class.)

Hi class, my name is Max Johnson. I am eight years-old, and I'm really happy to be in this new school. Last year I was at Douglas Garvey Elementary School. I didn't do as well as I know I'm capable of. I was bullied almost everyday. My parents decided to transfer me here. Mother said she wanted me to be somewhere I was encouraged to learn and thrive and to express myself. She said she didn't want me to be afraid to learn because of bullying. I always tried to defend myself when the bullies surrounded me, but I was always outnumbered. I didn't have any friends. I was always by myself drawing near the jungle gym. Sketching things I saw, like a group of classmates playing double-dutch or basketball. I created friends in my sketch book. We would go on adventures all across the world. All within the pages of this pad. We would laugh together and learn from each other. No one ever knew what loneliness felt like.

There were times where it felt like my sketch pad was my only friend. My dad gave me this sketch pad. He told me that I could create entirely new worlds in it. He told me that a crayon or a pencil had more strength than a sword. That I should never be afraid of my own curiosity. That I should sketch every idea that came to my mind. To always try things. To challenge myself and learn. To learn to see openly and honestly. He told me that in all my observations, I was learning how we should treat one another, with kindness, empathy, and compassion. He told me that, often it’s the people that have been treated horribly that are the most beautiful within. My name is Max Johnson, and I’m really excited to learn here at Art & Design Elementary School for the Young & Gifted, I already feel at home.
